Egg Basketball Bounce

This is one of those things I decided to do with the boys where I went, "Is this a real thing, or is someone trolling me into making a huge mess with raw eggs?" Turns out, the egg basketball bounce is indeed a real thing! (read more)

EGG BASKETBALL BOUNCE

Here's the idea:

Take an egg (or 36, like we did) and a ball that bounces. We used both a basketball and a four square ball; we think the four square ball worked better because it was more consistent across the surface.

Hold the ball and the egg together, one on top of the other, like so:

At the same moment, with both hands, release the egg and the ball.

The ball will hit the ground first and stop bouncing because all of the kinetic energy (I really hope I've got that right) transfers to the egg, which then SHOOTS up into the air.

Side note, the trajectory of the egg can be pretty unpredictable, so wear clothes you don't mind getting messy. You might also want to wear safety glasses, cause you might get hit in the face with an egg if you don't dodge well.

Here's the challenge we tried to do in our egg basketball bounce.

Out of 36 eggs, we wanted to see how many we could bounce (without cracking them) and catch before they hit the ground and splattered all over the place.

We were able to catch TWO!

And, when I say "we", I mean my oldest son, because my youngest and I weren't able to catch any.

It's a lot harder than it looks! Here's my oldest out-fielding for my youngest. Yep, we actually had someone trying to catch the egg that wasn't the one dropping it, and we STILL couldn't catch them. The only two that were caught were the ones dropped and caught by my son.
